Ease Your Fear of Going to the Dentist with Sedation Dentistry in Abbotsford

If you are a nervous, anxious or fearful dental patient, you are not alone. A large number of patients do not go to the dentist for regular check-ups because they are too anxious. Sedation can help reduce your anxiety so you can go to the dentist with less anxiety than normal.

Our sedatives are taken orally; they don’t require injections or needles. Some sedatives work so well that some patients can’t even recall details of the procedure afterwards. Sedation dentistry is the best alternative because it offers compliance and safety for the treatment.

If you are getting a procedure done with sedation, it is important that you are accompanied by a caregiver, as you will not be able to drive after the appointment.

Sedation dentistry is a great option for patients who may be anxious about visiting the dentist, patients with a strong gag reflex, or even anyone who would like to have several dental treatments completed in a single dental appointment. Nitrous oxide and conscious oral sedation are the sedation options available at Medora Dental Care. We make it our priority to ensure your experience is comfortable, relaxing and most importantly, pain-free!

So don’t put off needed dentistry any longer, contact us to learn more and find out if you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.

What Kinds Of Sedatives Are Available?

Here at Medora Dental, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Different levels of sedation can be utilized depending on individual needs.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is commonly used as a mild sedative. It is administered through a nose hood throughout the entire procedure. The sedative elevates the patient’s mood and can elicit a sense of well-being. Nitrous oxide relieves anxiety and reduces pain during dental procedures for patients who fear going to the dentist. Some numbness and tingling can be felt from the sedative. It has very few side effects and has been used safely in dental practices for over 100 years.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients who have a fear of needles, oral conscious sedation is an excellent option because it is administered orally. The medication is provided prior to the procedure to induce moderate sedation. Although it does not cause a deep sleep, oral sedation can dull your senses and make you feel groggy. As a result, most patients cannot remember the pain, smells or even noises during the procedure. Typically, a dose of oral sedation is taken prior to the appointment and will be added during the procedure as needed. Conscious oral sedation enables you to be perfectly awake during your dental treatment; however, you remember little to nothing of the appointment itself.

What Types Of Drugs Are Used In Sedation Dentistry?

Most of the drugs used in sedation are benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines ease anxiety, insomnia, seizures and muscle spasms. Each sedative have a different half-life, which means the effects last for a variety of duration. The estimated duration of the procedure determines which type of sedative is the most effective.
